The role of companies against climate change
Article by Augusto Laprovitta
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges that our society faces. This is reflected in the impact of global warming caused by the greenhouse effect. This is a natural phenomenon in which certain atmospheric gasses, such as carbon dioxide and methane, trap some of the sun's heat, allowing the Earth to maintain a suitable temperature for life. However, industrial activity has increased the concentration of these gasses, leading to an excessive warming of the planet. It is essential for businesses to take an active role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adopting sustainable practices.

In this article, we will describe the crucial role that companies must play in this fight and how their commitment can make a difference in environmental protection and the pursuit of a sustainable future. We will also provide examples of how some organizations are currently contributing to this cause.

International companies, as key players in the global economy, have immense resources to address climate change. One way to do this is with the reduction of their own greenhouse gas emissions. By adopting cleaner technologies, improving energy efficiency, and promoting sustainable production practices, companies can significantly reduce their environmental impact.

A very good example is Tesla, a leader in electric vehicle manufacturing. By providing cleaner transportation alternatives, they have contributed to the reduction of emissions and driven the transition towards sustainable mobility. Furthermore, they have set higher standards for the automotive industry and demonstrated that sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand.

Another company worth mentioning is Google which has been a pioneer in adopting renewable energy for its operations. They have invested in large-scale solar and wind projects, achieving the goal of operating with 100% renewable energy in their data centers and offices. They have also promoted transparency of environmental data, encouraging other companies to follow their example to avoid misinformation to their respective customers and users.

In addition, companies can influence their supply chains and collaborate with other stakeholders to achieve significant change. An example is the "Zero Deforestation" initiative led by Unilever. The company has committed to eliminating deforestation from its supply chains for palm oil, soy, wood, and paper. This comprehensive approach not only helps protect forest ecosystems but also drives suppliers to adopt more sustainable practices.

In conclusion, combating climate change requires collective action, and companies play a central role in this task. Beyond seeking short-term economic profitability, businesses must recognize their environmental responsibility and commit to sustainable practices by reducing emissions, promoting clean technologies, and collaborating with other organizations or companies. Taking all these measures, they can contribute significantly to creating a better world for this generation and for the future ones.
